These particular lazy nogoodnik twenty-something renters got sick of looking at an empty, unkempt lot near their building and decided to do something about it. They contacted the owner to get permission, and after he gave an indifferent "I don't care, do whatever you want," the Hamlin Garden was born.
It's not much to look at now, but between twenty-something grist and some transplanted perennials from neighbors, it should be a spectacle later this summer.

hooray! How is the sun in Hamlin Garden? Which direction does it face?
It's an east facing lot, which means it should be ok in the morning. I think they're planning for hardy natives rather than vegetables, though I can't say for sure. I just found out there's another garden going about the same distance east of us as this one is west of us. Plus we want to do our own raised beds this summer. So many gardens, so little time!
I think a community garden walking tour is in order for your visit this summer. When are you coming anyway?! (note I'm treating this as definitive, not tentative -- hoping to control the fates this way). :-)
A definitive. And a tour is a must!
That's the best news I've heard all day!
just goes to show what can be accomplished w/some gumption & a little red wagon!
That's fantastic! I wish we had a public garden in Mo-town, since we have no yard for growing vegetables. Good for these guys for making one when they couldn't find one.
I've just noticed this community garden and I live like right around the corner!
